Larenas History
In 1983, “LaRena’s Bridal & Formal Wear” opened for business under Janie K. Ohler. The business first opened in the former Penn Furniture building on the diamond in Uptown Somerset. “It was a good place to start. The large windows attracted a lot of attention. During parades, I would have my daughters act as automated mannequins with mechanical movements. People would often stop in just to see if the dummies were real people,” said Ohler.
The business later moved to 1854 North Center Avenue, Somerset in 1989. The location offered plenty of store front parking on a high traffic road.
In 2011, Ohler’s daughter Marcy McVicker came on board at the shop to be a manager of the business. It wasn’t until 2013 that Janie Ohler decided it was time for her retirement and daughter, Marcy, assumed ownership of the business. At this time the name was shortened and changed to ‘Larenas’.
Now, here we are in 2022 and Larenas is in a new set of hands. Marcy McVicker decided it was her time to step away from the business and listed it for sale. New owner, Greg Walker and wife Barbara from Shanksville, PA, purchased the business in September 2022.
